IRC logs for #automotive for Wednesday, 2020-01-15

smurrayJPK61: you can skip some of that, if it’s just for testing. you can add messages to the agl-vcar example signals.json and just regenerate the cpp file with low-can-generator (which is in the SDK). Look at my recent commit to agl-service-can-low-level change to add the steering wheel messages00:06
smurrayJPK61: the full process with the XML is a bit more if you’re building with a full set of can messages for a vehicle00:08
JPK61ok then i will test this, thank you00:12

JPK61Hi, i have a new problem, i have cloned the agl-service-can-low-level from git. after running cmake .. i get this message: "include could not find load file: .../agl-service-can-low-level/conf.d/config.cmake". But there are other folders in this directory, i changed the path in the CMakeLists.txt, but i only get other errors. How can i fix this, i02:42
JPK61don't know about cmake.02:42
smurrayJPK61: you'll need the AGL SDK, do you have that installed?02:49
smurrayJPK61: if so, it's easier to run "autobuild/agl/autobuild package" from the top level of agl-service-can-low-level, handles all the cmake/make running for you02:50
JPK61no i did not, my hope was that it works without. the sdk stuff was too much for me. '=D02:53
smurrayJPK61: you probably won't be able to build working binaries for the target platform w/o the matching SDK, and it's the easiest way to get can-config-generator03:01
JPK61then i'll see if i can get the sdk to work. the can-config-generator worked without and i have the application-generated.cpp with my can messages.03:06
smurrayJPK61: okay. You'll need to be able to rebuild low-can with that file, which should be straightforward with the SDK03:07

samplenick97Hello all. I am wondering if there is anybody here with experience with penetration testing, specifically with regards to automotive security / AGL11:58
samplenick97I am a 22 y/o Ethical Hacking student from the UK, and as a dissertation topic I am looking to conduct a basic penetration test on Automotive Grade Linux11:59
samplenick97I am currently trying to look into any previous attempts made, and from the looks of things it's not a very well researched area12:02
samplenick97I figure this community would be the best place to ask if anybody is aware of previous attempts of this kind, or any papers which I can be pointed towards which may help me out in some way12:03
samplenick97I hope I am correct in my understanding that this is the correct place to ask, if it is not then I am sorry to bother you12:04

paulbarkersamplenick97: It's not something I've seen any info on, definitely worth some research. Where in the UK are you studying if you don't mind me asking?12:53
samplenick97paulbarker: I'm studying at Coventry University13:03
samplenick97Currently my understanding of how automotive systems is limited, so anything you/anyone here can reccomend to help learn would be greatly appreciated :)13:04

paulbarkersamplenick97: There's a meeting of the app framework and security team at 14:00 UTC every other Wednesday. Calendar is here: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=linuxfoundation.org_i0rs8amkm0flde7kq5u4b9tef4%40group.calendar.google.com (timezone is US central)13:29
paulbarkerMay be worth joining that call and asking there13:29

RPsamplenick97: I'd certainly be interested to see the results of such work...13:34
RPsamplenick97: I work on the Yocto Project in a wider context, AGL is one of its users but findings in one area could help others13:34
*** sherbets has quit IRC13:41
samplenick97paulbarker: Thank you, I will take a look and see if they have any insight which might help13:51
samplenick97RP: I'm not entirely sure the results will be too useful for a lot of people here. I can't see myself scratching much further than surface level, but who knows lol13:51
