radiofree | so why conman | 00:44 |
---|---|---|
radiofree | i don't think any linux people working on anything related to that have actually used it | 00:44 |

paulsherwood | radiofree: ok, not sure what you mean then? that connman is not useable, or a bad choice or? | 10:51 |
radiofree | i've never used it, i don't know anyone that has other than "i used it on some embedded project for....", i don't know the reason | 10:56 |
radiofree | yum search connman | 10:56 |
radiofree | connman.i686 : An alternative daemon for managing internet connections on Linux | 10:56 |
radiofree | maybe i should actually try the alternative | 10:57 |
paulsherwood | what are the alternatives? | 10:58 |
radiofree | connman is the alternative, it says so right in the description | 10:59 |
rjek | I have only ever heard connman mentioned once before, and that was in the sentence "connman is somehow worse than NetworkManager" | 11:01 |
radiofree | i'm no nm expert, but i'd at least know where to look there, i'm making the assumption that these linux platforms will need to have people to debug issues on them at some point | 11:02 |
radiofree | anyone who's ever used linux will at least know what nm is, connman is completely foreign | 11:02 |
paulsherwood | so the question is why would anyone choose connman, over NetworkManager? | 11:49 |

JEEBsv | how maintained is nm these days? | 12:08 |
JEEBsv | seems relatively well by the git log | 12:09 |
JEEBsv | I guess someone would have to make a proper comparison on various sides (features, usability, dependencies) | 12:11 |
JEEBsv | my experience with connman is rather limited, so I can't say much. Mostly just had it in some images and noticed that it brought up the network just fine. | 12:12 |
persia | Generally, when I've seen connman used it was because the folk using it thought nm had too many moving parts, or had trouble debugging nm, rather than because of positive features of connman. That said, it has been some years since I was last involved in a connman vs. nm discussion: more recently the consensus seemed to be "use connman for embedded, nm for other things (except some servers)" without much evaluation or discussion. | 12:46 |
persia | (well, except some folk also use nm for resource-constrained systems like phones, tablets, kiosks, etc. when they aren't considering it an "embedded" software load because the microcontroller is more powerful than their memories of desktop workstations) | 12:48 |
