JEEBfury: you then get upload/download latency and have to make sure that whatever you're running can be completely separate from the rest (if I recall correctly GPUs *hate* syncing up and waiting). These issues also led to video encoding on the actual GPGPU parts of GPUs to not being A Thing ;)11:35

JEEBx264 has a PoC lookahead motion estimation thing in OpenCL but basically nobody should go even close to it for any real usage. the lookahead stuff was one of the few things that could run relatively separate from the rest of the encoding process11:36
