fredcadetehello08:47
rjekHello.08:47
fredcadeteI was wondering if anyone is using a Renesas board with their latest LTSI kernel?08:47
fredcadeteI tried it on a Porter board and have an audio regression08:48
fredcadeteand Renesas's support kindly informed me that Porter only has community support08:48
fredcadeteso here I am08:48
*** DanCauchy has quit IRC08:50
CTtpollardfredcadete: I'm not sure on the exact kernel our board is using, what exactly is the regression?08:52
fredcadeteGDP us using rcar-gen2-1.9.2 (https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/horms/renesas-backport.git/log/?h=bsp/v3.10.31-ltsi/rcar-gen2-1.9.2)08:53
fredcadeteIf I upgrade to rcar-gen2-1.9.5, then audio plays at half speed08:53
CTtpollardgulp08:54
fredcadeteI have identified the commit between 1.9.2 and 1.9.5 that introduced the regression, and proposed to Renesas08:54
fredcadetebut they seem to not be available to confirm nor deny that I am seeing things correctly08:54
* fredcadete sighs08:55

CTtpollardyeh just double checked on our board, 3.10.3108:56

fredcadetethey are both 3.10.31, as far as I know it's not possible to tell them apart at runtime08:57

fredcadeteI'll see if I can get something more out of Renesas08:58
fredcadetemaybe I can get this upstream08:59
fredcadeteif I fail then I'll post this to the ML so the next people upgrading don't have the same issue08:59

radiofreefredcadete: that's nice of them, i suppose that have a lovely open source GPU driver as well, community supported09:59
fredcadetethe GPU is not open source, as usual10:00
fredcadeteas for the rest Renesas is not that bad, most of the kernelspace is open source and developed in the open10:01
radiofreeyes i know, was joking10:02
fredcadeteif I had had a kernel code drop as happens with other vendors I would not have been able to bisect the issue10:02
fredcadetethey now have pointed me to stephen lawrence, it seems to be going somewhere10:02
radiofreethrow that porter out of the window and buy a jetson, or a minnowboard, is my advice10:02
radiofreethen you can use upstream + mesa :)10:03
fredcadetejetson? we have considered it but we ranked nvidia lower than renesas on openness10:13
fredcadetetheir supported BSP had fairly old components if I recall correctly10:14
* rjek wonders why we tolerate closed GPUs in exactly the way we wouldn't tolerate closed CPUs.10:14
fredcadetethe patent environment for GPUs is scary10:15
radiofreefredcadete: don't use the "supported bsp", the entire stack on the jetson is open10:15
fredcadeteif I were doing a GPU I would be very wary of open sourcing its drivers10:15
radiofreenvidia are doing great with with nouveau, at least for arm10:15
radiofreefredcadete: why?10:15
radiofreealso you can always just buy a minnowboard now, intel open gpu drivers are excellent10:16
rjekCPUs are massively patent-encumbered, too10:16
fredcadetethe most compelling reasoning I have heard for not opening your drivers is that trolls will look at it and take any small excuse to sue you to hell10:16
* radiofree doesn't have enough hours in the year to spend messing about with binary blobs provided by companies like renesas10:16
radiofreesoiled by the experience with freescale, their blobs are an utter disaster (locks you in to specific versions of weston etc)10:18
fredcadeteif you don't use the supported BSP your are more likely to get a "you are on your own" reply when you are two weeks away from SOP and you find a bug in driver code10:18
radiofreein my experience you're on your own anway10:19
radiofrees/anway/anyway10:19
fredcadetefor liability reasons it's good to keep your suppliers in the loop10:19
rjekOften using the "supported" BSP causes more problems that you can then do nothing about10:19
fredcadeteyes, but then you can point the finger at the supplier10:19
rjekWho then shrugs :)10:19
fredcadeteit's self-preservation as usual10:19
rjekAt least if it's open you can fix it yourself10:19
* radiofree looks at the "supported BSP he's working on currently10:20
* radiofree cries10:20
* rjek distills radiofree's tears into a trendy gin10:20
fredcadeteif you get a supported BSP that is open and current enough, that's better than unsupported and 6 months more recent10:21
fredcadetechoices choices10:21
radiofreecan you tell us where to find a current, supported BSP, that receives updates10:21
* radiofree looks at "supported" BSP with systemd 4410:21
fredcadete44??10:22

CTtpollardfredcadete: I'm still looking into the hmi controller fix btw12:01
CTtpollardI think I've narrowed it down to only happening on the initial launch of an app12:01
fredcadetethe timing stuff?12:01
CTtpollardyep!12:02
CTtpollardbug349 of gdp12:02
fredcadeteif at some point the hmi-controller starts using the new notifications from ivi-controller, then the race should not surface anymore12:02
CTtpollard'new' ?12:03
fredcadetelet me find that commit for you12:03
fredcadetehttp://git.projects.genivi.org/?p=wayland-ivi-extension.git;a=commit;h=df1f85d6787c7173eb55a3f00b60cd408a58278412:04
fredcadeteilmControl: send notifications for surface creation/deletion12:04
CTtpollardI'm looking in ilm_control.h locally atm12:06
CTtpollardand that notification needs to be captured beofre entering surface_control I think12:08
CTtpollardor at least, before setting properties for the surface within the function12:09
fredcadeteoh, right, sorry12:13
fredcadeteI was mixing up the surface creation and the committing of content12:14
CTtpollardmy understanding is that it could be potentially trying to commit content before the surface has actually been created12:15
fredcadeteyou mean the client committing content? that would be weird12:17
fredcadetefrom what I saw the problem happens when the controller commits a control too soon12:17
CTtpollardafaik right now, hmi-controller tries to switch to the surface and commits properties too soon12:17
CTtpollardyeh12:17
CTtpollard:)12:17
fredcadeteagreed12:17
CTtpollardI may have terms / context confused, I'm coming from the bottom here :)12:18
fredcadeteas are we all12:18
CTtpollardheh12:19
radiofreeplease forward port the gdp to latest wayland-ivi-extension12:21
radiofreethere's a notification api now that will tell you when a surface has been created12:21
radiofreeof course, you'll have to completly rewrite the input handling12:22
* radiofree doesn't apologise for that though, as the new input handling plugin is awesome12:22
fredcadete+112:23
CTtpollardso, that means layer_manager will need re-writing?12:23
radiofreewhat's layer_manager (sorry i don't know about about the gdp other than how much of nightmare it was to integrate)12:23
radiofreethe basic ilm_* layer management stuff is the same12:24
CTtpollardit's provided by meta-ivi12:24
radiofreelayer manager was the name of the old genivi compositor12:25
radiofreeit had both X11 and wayland support12:25
CTtpollardbut, I was reffering to this sorry http://git.projects.genivi.org/?p=layer_management.git12:25
radiofreethough, confusingly, people (including myself) still refer to wayland-ivi-extension + weston-ivi-shell as "layer manager"12:26
radiofreethat's the old one CTtpollard, if you're using weston you're not using that12:26
CTtpollardgood to know.. ta!12:27

louaihow committed are people to weston as the reference compositor? I've been looking at the whole ivi-shell stuff and the way the home screen works and it just seems to me that doing all of that would be quite a lot easier to do with QtWayland since you could have the home screen also be the compositor12:47
louaiif there's interest I might just go ahead and try to see how much work implementing the ivi-shell protocol's server side would be, we did get a patch for the client side recently that's being reviewed12:47
*** apinheiro has joined #automotive12:54
fredcadetelouai: in-house we didn't consider wayland compositors other than weston because chip suppliers support either X or weston12:58
fredcadeteradiofree: laugh all you want :)12:58
fredcadeterenesas has some patches on weston and gstreamer's waylandsink, to get less copies when playing video13:00
fredcadetewhich of course has the drawback of being stuck on weston 1.513:00
