eduardashello, what is the state of 4G modem support in AGL at the moment?13:42
dl9pfeduardas: there is support for few modem types, see the telematics profile docs. iirc libqmi based.14:00
dl9pf@smurray do you remember the codenames ?14:00
eduardasdl9pf: why is libqmi used? ofono has its own qmi backend IIRC14:02
smurrayofono uses libqmi14:02
eduardassmurray: you use upstream ofono or fork it like Sailfish OS does?14:02
smurrayeduardas: it's upstream only14:03
smurrayeduardas: it's demoware, vendors wouldn't use this stack in product, likely14:03
smurrayeduardas: ah, I am misremembering, we're not currently using separate libqmi14:04
smurrayeduardas: but some libqmi bits are used14:04
smurrayeduardas: outside of ofono14:04
smurraybeen 18 months since I seriously looked at it14:05
eduardassmurray: that is probably the case as libqmi is not listed among ofono DEPENDS14:05
smurrayright14:05
eduardassmurray: http://cgit.openembedded.org/openembedded-core/tree/meta/recipes-connectivity/ofono/ofono_1.31.bb?h=master14:05
smurrayI'd have to dig around, we were tweaking it at one point to get support for a particular modem to work, but that's been dropped in icefish up14:06
eduardassmurray: those libqmi bits outside are critical for cellular connectivity or is it just some testing code?14:06
smurrayeduardas: I can't remember right off.  I do recall the tools were very useful for debugging why things were not working14:08
dl9pfi can't remember the modem board numbers14:08
eduardassmurray: I am currently doing an embedded Linux Yocto based project with cellular... if anyone knows a good developer for modem integration into the connman + ofono stack, it would be good to know14:08
smurraydl9pf: Sierra Wireless discontinued the ones we were using14:08
eduardassmurray: would also be  good opportunity to cooperate as I can probably get AGL quite easily on our platform too14:09
smurrayeduardas: the difficulty would depend on the modem, basically.  Matt Ranostay that works with us did some work to get a couple working with ofono that weren't, but once you get away from Qualcomm ones, it's easy to end up with something with no upstream support14:10
smurrayeduardas: we've had customers pick Sierra Wireless ones, they're more expensive but their Qualcomm module based ones do seem the easiest to make work14:11
eduardassmurray: I'm currently using Simtech SIM7500E via ofono's QMI backend, but with no modem-specific plugin which is probably not the right way to go about this14:11
smurraylet me see if I can find the slides from ALS14:11
eduardasnot competent enough to write the plugin myself14:11
eduardassmurray: I am actually following ELCE, ELC videos quite intensely, AGL included... however cellular on Linux is a very rare topic sadly14:12
smurrayeduardas: yep14:13
smurrayeduardas: here's our presentation from last year: https://tinyurl.com/y9v48d9u14:13
smurrayeduardas: Digikey has been spamming Matt and myself about the SW modules being discontinued; I assume there are new models, but haven't looked14:14
smurrayeduardas: both Matt and myself have dug around in the ofono code some (he more than myself), but we've not done a new plugin14:15
*** bn_mobile has quit IRC14:19
smurrayeduardas: it occurs to me that Matt mentioned that Simtech module at one point, I'll ping him to see if he bought one to experiment with14:24
*** walzert has joined #automotive14:29
*** anjumkaiser has quit IRC14:46
eduardassmurray: is there a plan to have a reference platform with 4G support? if so, how is this decided uppon?14:56
smurrayeduardas: so far the AGL members haven't indicated a desire for one.  They all have their own different criteria for modem selection for product, so getting consensus would be hard14:58
smurrayeduardas: and there have been issues where some hardware they'd use for automotive isn't really purchasable for use in small quantities like dev boards14:59
smurrayeduardas: that's definitely the case for radio tuners, I could see it being the same for modems, maybe15:00
eduardassmurray: does AGL care for NXP i.MX in any capacity?15:00
smurrayeduardas: they're a member, but prefer customers directly engage with them AFAIK (they have their own AGL fork(s))15:01
smurrayeduardas: there's some community support for some i.MX6 and i.MX8 boards that uses what's available in the meta-freescale OE layer15:02
eduardassmurray: oh, that's interesting... perhaps I should try getting support from them, though I suspect they do not focus on 4G in any capacity15:02
eduardassmurray: did the decision to use connman + ofono in some way influenced by Tizen stuff? or did you have a serious discussion of NetworkManager/Modemmanager vs ConnMan/oFono?15:06
eduardasI think NetworkManager + ofono is also possible IIRC15:06
smurrayeduardas: connman + ofono is the default in OE/Yocto, but I believe that does stem from the Intel folks who worked on Tizen/Moblin/etc. pushing it in as a lightweight solution15:08
smurrayeduardas: iirc, Matt looked at the NetworkManager + ofono patches, and it looked like it'd take some work to get them going with current releases15:09
smurrayeduardas: it's not something that works out of the box15:10
smurrayeduardas: we kind of concluded hacking support for a particular modem in modemmanager would be easier if NetworkManager was needed15:10
eduardassmurray: good to know15:12
eduardassmurray: I am really thankful for you being generous with your time and answering my questions15:12
eduardassmurray: this is useful information for me15:12
smurrayeduardas: no worries, good luck15:13
