furythoughts on new workstation specs, threadripper 3960x, 128 gigglebytes of DDR4 3600, 2 TB Samsung 970 EVO plus, Corsair RM 750w?16:43
furyI'm gonna ask Santa real nice, may have to "make do" with a 3950x instead, but either one should be significantly faster than my current one, dual Xeon E5-2630v4 (20 cores total, 40 threads)16:44
furyit's still gonna be in service, but, need one for work from home for a while16:46
waltminerI bet it will run The Oregon Trail pretty well16:49
waltminerand what more do you really need?16:49
furyyes!16:49
dl9pfso high freq is sometimes better wrt the single thread operations than the many cores (won't be used in do_package),  3960/3970 are likely better than 3990 due to the frequency being lowered.16:50
furythat's what I was thinking16:51
fury40 threads is already idle for a good amount of time in these builds (clocked in at about 90 minutes for AGL), so many more threads than that won't help as much as the much higher frequency / IPC16:52
dl9pfif santa listens it would be the 3970 ;)16:53
fury2.2ghz 4 year old Xeon vs. 3.8-4.5 ghz 3rd gen Ryzen, I caught some benchmarks with the 3970x doing a Zeus sato build in 86 minutes vs. my current 23016:55
furyso, almost 3x faster if I get the 32 core16:55
mvlad*cries in 4 cores, a full build takes half a day, or more, if throwing chromium in the mix16:57
furybut, big jump in price to 3216:57
furyoof16:57
furyI'm grateful for the 20 I got, honest, just don't want to kill it hauling it back and forth...I've already had to refurbish it once, the first time I took it home16:59
furyI don't know what happened but the network stuff died and I had to reinstall Ubuntu16:59
danielsmvlad: four?! how? we should fix that17:29
furyfix it quick17:35
